Bevel Angle & Stone Setup Calculator
The angle printed on the box is a design intent, not a measurement. On the bench the ground angle routinely misses that figure by two to four degrees a side, and drifts along the length of the blade. Measure the bevel face and the thickness behind it and the true angle falls straight out — then work backwards to the spine lift that reproduces it on a stone.
What the bevel actually measures
Measure the bevel face on each side with a loupe or a scale rule, and the thickness of the blade immediately behind the bevel shoulder. The angle falls straight out of the triangle — no protractor and no faith in the catalogue figure required.
Calipers closed just above where the bevel meets the blade face. Typically 0.1–0.8 mm.
Shoulder to apex, measured across the face.
Equal widths mean a symmetric grind.
50 for a symmetric edge, 70 for a typical 70/30 asymmetric grind.
Double a per-side claim: “16° per side” is 32° included.
Setting that angle on a stone
Angles are hard to eyeball and easy to measure. For a given per-side angle, this is how far the spine sits off the stone when the face is at the correct pitch.
10–14° for a thin Japanese edge, 15–20° for a tougher all-rounder.
The lift changes along the blade because the height does.
